Did you know which village has the lowest temperature in Spain? It is called Mira, in Cuenca, and it recently became the coldest village in the country, with a temperature of -9.2 degrees.

Mira is located on a hill in the Serranía Baja de Cuenca region, bordering the province of Valencia (an hour’s drive from the city).

The municipal area covers 212 km2 and currently has about 1,300 inhabitants. Mira’s climate is continental, with hot summers and cold winters, hence it is the coldest village in Spain.

The surroundings are enchanting: the indigenous vegetation includes pines of various species, abundant Mediterranean scrub and wild aromatic plants, such as lavender.

It is also known for its vineyards and olive and almond groves, making for a beautiful and traditional setting.

What to see in Mira, Cuenca

If you are looking for a getaway to a charming village, Mira could be an option. In this village, classified as the coldest in Spain, travellers will find an array of monuments to visit while enjoying the tranquillity of Cuenca.

Mira’s old quarter is one of the most beautiful in Cuenca province. Declared a historical and artistic site, it has a rich architectural heritage:

  • Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción: Built in the 16th century, it is the most important monument in Mira. It is a Gothic-Renaissance-style building with a 25-metre-high tower.
  • Town hall: It was built in the 17th century when Mira ceased to be a hamlet of Requena and became a town with ordinary, civil and criminal jurisdiction.
  • The birth square with arcade arches is the centre of the village.

There are also other monuments and sights worth visiting in Mira, such as:

  • Ermita de la Piedad: On the way out of the village of Mira, heading north, on the road to La Piedad, along the river Ojos de Moya, you will find this 16th-century temple.
  • Cueva Santa del Cabriel: Located in the Serranía Baja de Cuenca, at one of the ravines on the left bank of the river Cabriel, on the western border of the municipality of Mira, is this religious shrine that has been in use since the 5th century BC.
  • Antón Martín’s house: The house where Antón Martín, a religious man and nurse, was born and lived.
  • Mira railway station: The decommissioned railway station is located 6 km south of the city centre.
  • Sierra de Mira: A beautiful mountainous landscape that fascinates nature lovers and those who enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking.
  • Hoces del río Mira: A series of gorges shaped like a crescent.
